The Clayton House

The Clayton House in Fort Smith, Arkansas, is a historic landmark originally built in 1852 by William B Sutton, a local successful merchant. During the Civil War the house was turned into a hospital by the US Army. After the Civil War William H.H. Clayton, the chief prosecutor for Judge Isaac Parker, purchased the property in 1882 and added on its entire northern wing, almost doubling the size of the home.

This Victorian-style home is notable for its intricate woodwork and ornate design, reflecting the social and economic changes of the late 19th century as Fort Smith developed into a bustling town. The house served as a gathering place for influential figures of the time, showcasing the city’s growth and heritage.

However, the Clayton House is also known for its ghost stories and folklore, adding an intriguing layer to its history. Visitors and staff have reported encounters with a mysterious woman in white, believed to be a former resident or guest, who has been seen wandering the halls and gazing out of the upstairs windows. A nurse from the Civil War era is believed to still be occupying the areas of the original home and a man has been seen in the study and at the top of the stairs, watching the visitors to the house. Strange sounds, such as echoing footsteps and whispers, have been heard, along with reports of objects moving inexplicably and doors opening and closing on their own.
