Jason Scott & The High Heat
Red Dirt Music from Oklahoma
Red dirt is a genre of country music that gets its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma. Many red dirt acts got their start in bars surrounding Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, a city considered to be the center of red dirt music. The genre also extends to music made south of the Red River in Texas.
“We love our community in Oklahoma City, but we didn’t want to make a Red Dirt record,” explains Jason Scott, lead vocalist of Jason Scott & The High Heat. “Instead, we included grooves and textures that move beyond that. We added little vignettes to songs like ‘Sleeping Easy,’ which begins with old reel-to-reel footage of a tent revival. We took country songs like ‘A Little Good Music’ and included guitar solos that Nels Cline might have played on a Wilco album. We let ourselves get heavy on ‘In the Offing,’ which sounds far louder than anything I was originally making. For us, it was all about creating a mood, and serving the song with interesting sounds.
The History of Red Dirt Music
Red Dirt music was rooted in sacred ground along the outskirts of town in 1979, where once stood a two-story farmhouse. For over 20 years, musicians held jam sessions in the living room, on the front porch, in the garage – known as the Gypsy Cafe, and around campfires.
The High Heat’s Unique Sound
Caught halfway between amplified Americana and heartland roots-rock, Jason Scott & the High Heat create a sweeping, dynamic sound that reaches far beyond the traditions of their Oklahoma City home. Too loud for folk music and too textured for Red Dirt, this is the sound of a genuine band rooted in groove, grit, and its own singular spirit, led by a songwriter whose unique past — a Pentecostal upbringing, years logged as a preacher-in-training, and an eventual crisis of faith — has instilled both a storyteller’s delivery and an unique perspective about life, love, and listlessness in the modern world.
Jason Scott & the High Heat are one of Oklahoma’s hottest groups, and with their unique blend of red dirt and roots-rock music, it’s easy to see why. This is a band that has something to say, and they do it with passion and soul. If you’re looking for a band that will take you on a journey to the heart of the American Midwest, look no further than Jason Scott & the High Heat.
